Dan and I just got back from a 5-day road trip from Oakland, up through Napa Valley to the California coast and the Redwood forests, then up the Oregon coast and back home. It was a great break from work and the stresses of daily life. Some of our favorite places, and recommendations if you're ever in the Napa Valley area, dear reader, are: Alexis Baking Company for breakfast in Napa, the Heitz Cellars wine tasting, Woodhouse Chocolates in St. Helena, and the cottages at the Indian Springs Resort in Calistoga (it has its own natural geyser that heats a gigantic swimming pool as well as provides steam for a natural steam room). We also enjoyed taking Highway 128 from the Napa Valley to the coast - very scenic. Finally, we happened upon "One Love's Eclectic Cuisine" in Brookings, Oregon, where we had a most fantastic lunch cooked up by a hippie family. Of course if you're ever in Yachats, Oregon, you must visit the Green Salmon coffee shop, written up by the N.Y. Times as one of the best coffee shops on the west coast!
